“But I’m Not a Writer” (And Other Lies the Internet Told You)

Let’s clear this up: You don’t need a dramatic backstory or bestselling memoir energy to tell a great story.

You just need to know how to turn your everyday experiences, wins, or even small frustrations into content that makes your audience feel something. It’s not about being deep or oversharing to a point it feels uncomfortable. It’s about being real.

The Simple Storytelling Formula I Swear By

Here’s the formula I use (and teach!) to help my clients write storytelling content that feels real, not rehearsed:

Hook → Agitate → Solution

Let’s break that down:

1. Hook

This is your “stop the scroll” moment. The line that makes someone go, “Wait, tell me more.”

You want curiosity, relatability, or a bold truth. Here are some examples:

  • Nutritionist: “I used to think bloating was just part of being a woman.”

  • Hairdresser: “My client burst into tears after I cut her hair—and not for the reason you think.”

  • Therapist: “Here’s what I wish more clients knew about anxiety.”

  • Veterinarian: “This one ‘healthy’ treat could be causing your dog’s gut issues.”

2. Agitate

This is where you expand on the pain point or problem and get specific. Make it relatable. Make them feel seen. The best storytelling content isn’t just personal, it’s recognizable.

  • Nutritionist: ““Every time I ate — even healthy meals — I felt heavy, gassy, and uncomfortable. I tried cutting out gluten, dairy, and everything in between, but nothing really helped.”

  • Hairdresser: “She had just come out of a rough breakup and told me she wanted a bold change. But halfway through the cut, the reality of letting go hit her hard.”

  • Therapist: “It doesn’t always look like panic attacks. Sometimes it’s overthinking every text. Or feeling exhausted after doing nothing. Or avoiding things without knowing why.”

  • Veterinarian: “A lot of commercial treats marketed as natural or ‘grain-free’ still contain additives, fillers, and ingredients that mess with digestion — especially in sensitive dogs.”

3. Solution

Here’s where you give value. Share what worked for you. Offer a new perspective. Invite action. Great storytelling content ends with a takeaway your audience can apply or reflect on.

  • Nutritionist: “Once I started focusing on balanced meals, chewing slowly, and supporting digestion with a few simple habits, the bloating finally stopped feeling like my normal.”

  • Hairdresser: “That appointment turned into more than just a transformation — it became a release. And we created a look that made her feel strong, fresh, and herself again.”

  • Therapist: “The good news is that anxiety is treatable. And therapy can give you the tools to understand your patterns and respond with more clarity and control.”

  • Veterinarian: “Switching to single-ingredient treats can make a huge difference in energy, coat health, and daily poops.”
